Janka Hardness
The Janka hardness test is a very good indicator of a wood species' ability to withstand denting and wear. The test measures the force required to embed a .444 inch steel ball to half its diameter in wood. The higher the test result, the harder the wood. Brazilian cherry, with a rating of 2350, is nearly twice as hard as hard as Northern Red Oak, with a Janka rating of 1290.
